Our economic growth program in Pakistan focuses on private sector development, especially in agriculture and related industries. We are boosting agricultural productivity by increasing irrigation, helping manage water supplies, and introducing improved technologies and management practices. We also help agribusinesses and other small and medium-sized enterprises access financing, form institutional links, and tap into more lucrative markets.

Our work with women micro-entrepreneurs emphasizes the development of sustainable home-based businesses, mainly in dairy, textiles, and horticulture. We provide training to employees in many other sectors, such as dairy and government, and we cooperate with government and private sector entities at all levels to promote a business-enabling environment. We are also helping improve Pakistan's trade relationship with its neighbors.

Goal:
Increase employment and incomes for 250,000 farmer households (representing two million Pakistanis) by irrigating one million acres of land and connecting small farmers to major agribusinesses.

Results:
USAID has trained 70,000 women micro entrepreneurs from Punjab and Sindh in basic financial literacy and enterprise management training.
USAID is helping increase exports of Pakistani mangos and other crops.

The U.S. is supporting implementation of the 2010 Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement, which includes rehabilitated border infrastructure and new management techniques to reduce transit time.

U.S.-funded livelihoods activities supported over 600,000 families following the August 2009 Internally Displaced Persons crisis and 2010 flood. After the 2010 floods, agriculture assistance reached over 500,000 households providing superior seeds and other support, dramatically increasing farmers’ wheat yields 60% above the national average.
